The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in its 2020/21 season under the helm of Vasily Petrenko as he steps into the role of Music Director Designate.
The Russian maestro captures the imagination with some of the most enduring orchestral music ever composed. Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker join works that pushed the boundaries of Romanticism: Debussy’s Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune and Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht.
Breakout star saxophonist Jess Gillam performs Michael Nyman’s hypnotic concerto Where the Bee Dances, and former RPO Artist in Residence Kian Soltani reunites with the Orchestra to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto.
Conductor Sir Andrew Davis leads a spectacular performance of Beethoven’s momentous Symphony No.9. In this performance, the RPO joins forces with the Bach Choir in Mahler’s expanded arrangement of one of the undisputed high points of symphonic music from the 19th century.
