With God on Our Side… Religion and War

25 Oct - 14 Nov
How do religions that preach peace and understanding justify bloodshed? From the St George’s cross of The Crusades to the black flag of ISIS, wars continue to be waged under the banner of religion. Does a war waged in the name of religion mean that its true teachings have been perverted to political or ideological ends? Or are there some justifications for mass violence taught by religions themselves?

Come along to our seventh gathering in Belief and Beyond Belief, a festival which explores what it means to be human in the 21st century, featuring a varied programme of talks and debates on religion, spirituality, belief and the world.

Buy a weekend pass for access to talks, panel discussions and debates throughout the weekend as we investigate the complex relationship between war and religion.

Events include a keynote from Karen Armstrong, author of Fields of Blood: Religion and the History of Violence; a Belief and Beyond Belief special edition of Sunday Assembly, the secular congregation that celebrates life; and talks about modern jihad.
