OAE: Visions, Illusions and Delusions 2017/18
This series of 10 concerts launches six seasons exploring the Enlightenment and ideas that made the modern world.
Bach, Handel, Mozart and more
Highlights of the season include The Judas Passion, a controversial new commission by Sally Beamish exploring the Easter story through the eyes of the traitor.
John Butt and choreographer Hubert Hazebroucq team up for Dangerous Liaisons to recreate the sights and sounds of the 17th century Palace of Versailles, while the OAE goes to the cinema for a remarkable salon performance of Strauss’ opera Der Rosenkavalier against the backdrop of the 1926 film.
There’s also Handel’s sensual Semele and violinist Nicola Benedetti’s first appearance with the OAE.
Six Chapters of Enlightenment
Visions, Illusions and Delusions is the first of the OAE’s Six Chapters of Enlightenment, six years of concerts and events celebrating and questioning Enlightenment thought. What caused this explosion in science and the use of reason? And what could it mean for the so-called ‘post-truth’ world we live in today?
These events go on sale to Southbank Centre Members at 10am on Monday 6 February, and on general sale at 10am on Friday 10 February.
