World on the Brink

21 Oct 2017 - 22 Oct 2017

In a world increasingly caught between extremes, what role can literature play in reimagining our relationship to the planet, ourselves and each other?

Literature from the north has long been shaped by its relationship to the natural world, from ancient myths to contemporary writing that captures the ebb and flow of life across the region. Nordic authors are deeply attuned to the challenges of the present and offer essential insights into the way we live now.

Across two days of talks, and readings, Southbank Centre presents the best established and emerging authors from across the Nordic region, in dialogue with their British contemporaries and speakers from a range of diverse disciplines. From discussing what words can do in a world on the brink, to how literature can shine a light on the experience of those on the margins, to the way Nordic noir can expose the cracks in society, the weekend offers timely debates and unexpected literary encounters.
