Immerse yourself in a Nordic soundscape of sea and sky, newly commissioned from sound artist Jens L Thomsen.
1 July – 30 August
Open daily, 10am – 6pm
Green side foyers, Level 5, Royal Festival Hall
Based in London but originally from the Faroe Islands, Thomsen has created a site-specific soundscape in Level 5 of Royal Festival Hall.
This soundscape brings together and embodies the unifying traits of the Nordic region. Each individual sound has been collected through an open call for 'sample sounds' from throughout the region.
While the sea separates the Nordic countries, it is also what connects them. Here the sounds of the sea – both above and below its surface – form the basis of the soundscape, contrasting with the sounds of sky and shore.
Several sound pieces played by separate loudspeakers spread across Level 5 of Royal Festival Hall create the complete soundscape.
Thomsen is also the founder of ORKA, a band that has released six albums. ORKA have crafted their own handmade instruments out of agricultural tools on a small farm in the Faroe Islands, yet produce a hard, cathartic electronic sound that has earned them two nominations for the Nordic Council Music Prize.
This installation may be switched off during performances in the auditorium.
