Nordic Matters

Overview

Nordic Larder
About

Did you know that Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Finland have all been voted the world's best countries in which to be a woman? Or that the United Nations rates Denmark the happiest place on the planet?

The Nordic countries have long been at the forefront of social change. Their fresh approach to parenting and education puts young people’s rights on the agenda. Their investment in sustainable energy sets inspiring benchmarks, and women in the Nordic countries are achieving a better quality of life by changing the structures of society.

Over one year, Southbank Centre invites you to look more closely at what’s happening in Nordic art and culture. Find out more about sustainable food and communal singing, hygge and saunas, paternity leave and the struggle for gender equality.

There’s music, dance, theatre, literature, spoken word, visual art, design, fashion and food from the Nordic countries to explore throughout our festivals in 2017. You can also join us for talks and debates about what the Nordic countries are doing right, and the challenges they still face.

As part of Southbank Centre’s Nordic Matters programme, SC Food Market introduces the
Nordic Larder.

Journey with us into the heart of Nordic culture through their food and drink, and speak to Nordic traders about their culinary heritage.

Taste authentic Nordic street food, drinks and produce, as we host a variety of traders from across London’s Nordic community.

What’s Nordic food all about?

Sustainability & seasonality
Produced with care and reflecting the changes in seasons, Nordic cooking uses ingredients particular to their climates, that are farmed sustainably whether on land or in their seas.

Traditions old and new
Local dishes and national food traditions are gaining ground again, but with a new and stronger profile, not only in everyday kitchens but also in school canteens and gourmet restaurants.

Health & wellbeing
Nordic cuisine seeks to combine the demand for good taste with modern knowledge on healthy living. This includes using fresh regional varieties of fruit and vegetables and combining the best in Nordic culinary traditions with impulses from abroad.
