Liz West: Hymn to the Big Wheel, 2021

This interactive work explores movement through light and colour. The transparent panels are layered to mix and blend their colours and as people move around and through the octagonal installation different combinations are revealed. This movement echoes that of the earth itself (the ‘big wheel’ of the title), which spins continually on its axis.

The changing light conditions over the course of a day result in repeating and evolving patterns of coloured light and shadows. Like a sundial for the darkest hours of the year, this work amplifies the natural light of winter through a spectrum of jewel-like colour.

Liz West (born 1985) is an artist who makes sculptures, installations and environments that heighten our sensory awareness to explore our emotional and physical response to light and colour.
