Building inclusive and anti-racist schools
In 2024, the Hayward Gallery presented There is Light Somewhere, a survey of work by Bahamian artist, Tavares Strachan.
The exhibition inspired multiple strands of work with schools and young people, which explored ideas of identity, belonging, and cultural visibility.
In exploring the themes of Strachan’s work, it felt vital to equip both our artist-educators and the school teachers involved in our projects with the knowledge and understanding of equity and representation, and how this might impact both themselves and their pupils.
As a legacy to our work around There is Light Somewhere, we worked with Ella Phillips of creative culture agency C Catalysts Ltd, to deliver teacher training centred around anti-racist approaches to building more equitable learning environments.
This resource was developed out of conversations with our participating teachers, and its aim is to share that knowledge and understanding more widely, supporting teachers and educators at all levels to help you reflect on your teaching practice regardless of subject area or role.
