Hayward Download: Linder

Dive into the 2025 Hayward Gallery exhibition, learn more about the artist and produce your own creative responses

Hayward Download is a downloadable resource for teachers and educators looking for a deeper dive into the themes of our Hayward Gallery exhibition Linder: Danger Came Smiling.

The first London retrospective showcase of the pioneering feminist artist, Danger Came Smiling celebrates 50 years of Linder’s work dissecting our fascination with the body and its representation. The exhibition includes her landmark images from Manchester’s legendary punk music scene, as well as photographs, performance video, sculpture and recent photomontages that reimagine myths from Cinderella to surrealism.

This accompanying resource supports teachers to take a deeper dive into the themes and context of Linder’s work, exploring the archetypal images and portrayal of women in art, and looking at how the artist subverts meaning and the female body through mediums such as ‘photomontage’, mixed media and photography.

This resource has been created in collaboration with education consultant, Anjali Patel and is aimed at teachers working with students aged 16  and over.

Linder: Danger Came Smiling is recommended for audiences aged 16 and over. The exhibition includes depictions of nudity and images of a sexual nature. Our resource is aimed at students and young people aged 16 plus, and includes information to support age appropriate conversations about these themes for teachers.
