Curating Otherwise
Taking place across Birmingham, Carmarthenshire and London, Curating Otherwise – a new programme by HOUSE OF DREAD, commissioned by the Southbank Centre – explores curating as a lived, collective practice rooted in place, memory, care and imagination.
Part of our Imagine Being Us series, uncovering the art of curating, Curating Otherwise explores how stories are remembered and retold, how public spaces shape cultural life, how sound carries memory across generations, and how new cultural futures are imagined together. Through conversations, workshops, walks, open calls and collective reasoning, the programme creates opportunities to shape culture, care for memory and imagine new ways of gathering, making and sharing knowledge.
Curating Otherwise creates new pathways into curatorial practice, strengthens relationships between communities and cultural institutions, and supports the next generation of artists, organisers and cultural practitioners.
The programme unfolds across two core moments.
Curatorial Fieldnotes
A series of intimate, off-site sessions in Carmarthen (through Oriel Myrddin) and Birmingham (through Hood Futures), convening artists, young people, cultural workers and local communities.
These gatherings act as spaces for experimentation, exploring how curating emerges through place, class, community and lived experience.
Curating Otherwise: The Gathering
The programme culminates here at the Southbank Centre in a day of provocations, conversations, workshops and collective reasoning. Drawing on our archives, histories and public spaces, The Gathering explores how curatorial practice emerges through memory, place, sound and imagination, creating space for new ideas, new collaborations and new cultural futures.
