Combining aspects of weaving, sculpture and installation, it existed in the Hayward Gallery from May to July 2021 as a single immersive environment.

This film, produced in partnership with Nowness and Kunsthalle Zürich, takes a closer look at the exhibition, and gains an insight from the artist himself. Adams discusses how his early years, growing up in aprtheid era South Africa shaped his approach, and how the process of weaving, losing oneself in the repetitive motions, can offer a form of escapism.

Exploring concerns related to race, religion and sexuality, Adams’ intricate textile works also reference the socio-political histories of creole communities in South Africa’s Cape Town, where he grew up.

‘My work deals with my lived experience, growing up in Cape Town in the 1980s during the last part of the apartheid era’
