Aurora Orchestra: Carrillo & Revueltas Fiesta

Aurora Orchestra performs the music of two Mexican musicians who carved out their own paths in music and their nation, in a carnival of colourful pieces.

Julián Carrillo and Silvestre Revueltas were outlaws, bypassing nationalistic cultural policies by defining their own national sounds – at their own risk.

Tonight, these two brave and brilliantly individual Mexican minds are celebrated in one concert.

Carillo lived between many worlds, musically and physically. A violin protégé who studied in the musical city of Leipzig and played in its famous Gewandhaus Orchestra, where he wrote his first symphony, he went on to teach at the National Conservatoire in Mexico City.

Returning from New York in the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution, he announced his own musical revolution: Sonida 13, his self-declared overhaul of the Western tonal system.

Carillo’s music is interspersed with works by his contemporary Revueltas, who combined Mexican street songs with classical compositions to create satirical pieces that represented the marginalised and powerless in his society.

As with all of the music celebrated in Sound Within Sound, this performance is a tribute to musicians whose works do not slot neatly into musical history’s score.
