Creative Encounters: String Looping

Wed 11 Nov 2026, 6pm

Find your rhythm as you learn the ancient, meditative art of looping to handcraft your own mini baskets using yarn.

Run time 2 hours and 30 minutes (approx)
Free – no ticket required

String is one of our oldest technologies. So ancient we could say a ‘String Age’ once existed alongside the Stone Age. But as a soft technology, string decomposed. What survived is the memory of choreographies of making, carried in our hands and passed on through lived experience – a knowledge that needs no words.

Using a single piece of yarn, a needle and your fingers, learn all about looping from artist Renata Minoldo. It’s a technique so ancient it predates knitting and is so resilient that it won’t unravel even if you cut it!

Find your rhythm in this intuitive, repetitive action as you create small baskets and pouches perfect for holding precious charms and treasures.

After starting on your own, connect your work with others to form a communal carrier bag growing across the space, intertwining individual gestures into a beautiful collective creation that holds each other together.

Bring anything you’d like to loop around. From a fruit you love to a dear treasure you want to keep close to you.

No prior experience is needed, and all are welcome.

Creative Encounters is your creative space in the heart of the city, bringing together Londoners old and new for art, making and conversation.

About the artist

Renata Minoldo (Rosario, Argentina) is an artist, botanical dyer and educator based in London. Interested in relationships between vibrational ecologies, somatic memory and experiences of reciprocal care and intimacy, she works across expanded sculpture, relational objects and social engagement, where she fosters access to sensorial spaces for collective thinkering. Her practice, anchored in slow textile crafts and informed by material feminisms, threads non-verbal communication with embodied knowledge and intuitive learning/unlearning.
