First Five: Yomi Ṣode with Laura Mvula

Join Yomi Ṣode in this edition of First Five as he speaks with Laura Mvula about the works and legacy of Nina Simone, with music curation from Conrad Kira.

Together Ṣode and Mvula explore Simone’s global and cultural impact, music and how it relates to generations of artists and thinkers.

Remember the book that changed your life? The inspirational figure that opened your eyes? The song you’ll never forget? Now pick two books, two tracks and one person that define you and you’ve got your First Five.

Laura Mvula’s 2013 debut album Sing to the Moon introduced and firmly positioned her as one of Britain’s most innovative talents whose distinctive sound continues to develop. Her albums have picked up two Ivor Novellos, two MOBOs and BRITs nods, with all three of her albums being nominated for the Mercury Prize – a rare feat in the award’s history.
