Pavel Kolesnikov: Feldman's Triadic Memories

Fri 29 Jan 2027, 7pm

Multi-prize-winning pianist Pavel Kolesnikov performs Morton Feldman’s hushed, expansive keyboard work, in which time itself seems to stand still.

Pavel Kolesnikov is known for thoughtful, carefully shaped programmes that move between early and contemporary music, often revealing unexpected connections. His playing combines clarity with a finely controlled touch, drawing close attention to sound and detail.

Feldman’s Triadic Memories, composed in 1981, unfolds on a vast scale, not through dramatic contrast but through muted shades, and subtle shifts in pattern and texture. Repeated ideas invite the listener to search for connections that remain just out of reach.

The composer described his piece as an attempt to explore how memory works, creating music that seems to move forward while gently resisting direction. Small changes take on weighty significance; familiar shapes dissolve as quickly as they appear.

In this quiet, mesmeric sound world, time feels suspended. The delicate colours and resonances of Kolesnikov’s piano draw the listener into a space of close listening and reflection.
