The twice Welsh Music Prize-nominated artist The Anchoress (aka Catherine Anne Davies) makes a long-awaited return with the album As We Once Were.
The record peers into the nuances of motherhood, generational resilience and the strength of women in the face of loss and trauma, creating a conversation across four generations of women.
‘I wanted to reclaim the idea of the “damsel in distress”, Davies says. ‘It was never an archetype I identified with. I look back at my mum and her mother and all I saw was strength.’
Blending the drama of Scott Walker with the ambition of auteurs such as Kate Bush and Weyes Blood, The Anchoress delivers a rich sonic world, moving from 12-string guitar shoegaze to celebratory queer rock anthems.
Featuring an all-star cast of guest vocalists – James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers), Gwenno, Hannah Peel and Eaves Wilder – As We Once Were follows 2021’s much-loved The Art Of Losing, praised by Elton John as ‘one of my favourite records of the year’.
