Spinning Yarns Workshop: No Place Like Home
Sat 27 Sep 2025, 11am
Venue: Shirley Library
Address: Shirley Precinct, Shirley, Southampton, SO15 5LL
Spend a morning weaving stories together with Southampton-based textile artist, Shobhna Philips; and writing facilitator, Susmita Bhattacharya.
In this welcoming 2 hour drop-in session participants will create pom-poms, friendship bands and do tapestry weaving, whilst sharing life stories with each other guided by Susmita’s prompts. These ‘yarns’ will be collected and Susmita will put them together as a poem which will be displayed in the library and on WOL’s website.
This relaxed session is aimed at BPOC people, free to participate and suitable for all ages.
Susmita Bhattacharya’s novel, The Normal State of Mind (Parthian) was long-listed at the Mumbai Film Festival, 2018. Table Manners (Dahlia Publishing) won the Saboteur Award for Best Short Story Collection and was featured on BBC Radio 4 Extra. She mentors underrepresented writers and is co-founder of the Write Beyond Borders Mentoring Project.
This event is part of Writing Our Legacy’s ‘No Place Like Home’ programme, which centres creative responses to themes of home and childhood home. Supported by Arts Council England and Wire Wool Events.
