‘Sote makes mind-melting electronic music at the centre of a vital scene in Tehran’

Pitchfork

Iran-based electronic composer and sound artist Ata ‘Sote’ Ebtekar reworks recent tracks in an atmospheric show with the London Contemporary Orchestra.

Taking place in darkness, the gig retraces works from Sote’s Majestic Noise Made in Beautiful Rotten Iran, released in March 2022 on Sub Rosa, and his 2020 Opal Tapes release, Moscels.

Over the last three decades, Sote’s work has been published by labels including Warp, Sub Rosa, Opal Tapes, Diagonal, Mute and Morphine.

His 2016 release Hardcore Sounds from Tehran was a The Quietus top 100 album of the year, and saw Sote reinvent high-energy banging hardcore by twisting it into challenging rhythmic and sonic structures.

In 2018, he founded a new label called Zabte Sote, focusing on releases by Iranian experimental electronic composers.

Known for creating compositions that range from the delicate to the abrasive, using both acoustic and electronic sounds, Ebtekar creates music that, while rooted in many cultures at once, belongs to none in particular.

Sote’s work includes solo all-synthetic music, electro-acoustic audiovisual group projects, and multi-channel sound installations.
