Martyn Pickersgill

In a digital celebration of the coveted literary prize, this year’s winner, Douglas Stuart, appears in conversation with 2019 winner Bernardine Evaristo.

In his first public event following the announcement, Stuart discusses his winning novel, Shuggie Bain, and the experience of securing the £50,000 prize in an evening of readings and conversation, plus an audience Q&A.

For the past 14 years, we have hosted the shortlist readings in our Royal Festival Hall, but this year we present an exclusive interview with the 2020 winner.

Making up the most diverse shortlist in the Booker Prize’s history, the shortlist also featured The New Wilderness by Diane Cook, This Mournable Body by Tsitsi Dangarembga, Burnt Sugar by Avni Doshi, The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste and Real Life by Brandon Taylor.

The leading literary award in the English-speaking world, the Booker Prize is awarded annually for the best novel of the year written in English and published in the UK or Ireland.

This event is pre-recorded exclusively for the Southbank Centre.
