    Arditti Quartet

The Arditti Quartet, champions of contemporary chamber music for over 40 years, perform UK premieres from Betsy Jolas, Tansy Davies and Christian Mason.

Founded in 1974 with a mission to champion and enrich contemporary chamber music, the Arditti Quartet performs works written especially for them in this concert.

Three UK premieres, including two Southbank Centre co-commissions, are at the centre.

Aged 95, Betsy Jolas has been praised by The Times for her ‘sly sense of humour with a musical style to match’.

Her latest quartet takes wing alongside a new commission from Tansy Davies, whose celebrated opera Between Worlds movingly imagined the last hours of those who lost their lives in 9/11.

Christian Mason, winner of the 2015 Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung Composer Prize, has written a new quartet for the Ardittis, his works described as ‘astonishingly inventive and powerful, generating a searing, hypnotic intensity’ by The Strad.

Finally, Clara Maida’s …das spinnt… is ‘a spidery, dense and elastic work whose ‘filaments never stop intertwining’ in a hypnotic spiral of kinetic energy’, says Bachtrack.
