Mixing It Up: An introduction from Ralph Rugoff

‘In mixing things up, artists are really asking us to see connections between things that we don't normally see’.

In this video Hayward Gallery Director Ralph Rugoff introduces the exhibition, Mixing It Up: Painting Today, a celebration of paintings that bring together diverse images and ideas, and encourage us to see the world around us in a different way.

Within this introduction Rugoff gives particular focus to two works, lick your teeth, they so clutch (2021) by Rachel Jones and The Captain and The Mate (2017-18) by Lubaina Himid.

‘One of the things that aligns the artists of this exhibition is references from the past and the present, and they ask us to think about our connection to the past, and how we relate that to our present.’
