Given the heatwave that has hung over the country for what feels like a decade, you’d be forgiven for thinking the summer was coming to an end. However, here at Southbank Centre, our summer is only just beginning. From July into August we’ll be celebrating a summer of sound, soul and sunshine on a specially constructed outdoor stage on our Thames-side Riverside Terrace. And what’s more, it’s all completely free.
Here’s what you can look forward to.
Thursday evenings, 26 July - 23 August
Thursdays are the new Fridays. And not just for people lucky enough to work a four-day week. Every Thursday evening this summer we’ll be kicking off the weekend a day early with a free dance party overlooking the River Thames courtesy of the ever popular collective; Heart n Soul DJs. Come and enjoy London’s Golden Hour with their specially crafted Sundowner Sets, each Thursday from 26 July until 23 August.
27 - 29 July
The first of five specially themed weekends of free performances and workshops on our riverside stage is dedicated to all things choral. Bring your friends down to Southbank Centre on the final weekend in July to join us in celebrating the power of the human voice and the spirit of communal singing.
3 - 5 August
Uncover the new wave of multi-disciplinary street artists with a free weekend of performance featuring Magero, Rwaheed Collective, Aqwea and more, courtesy of the Peckham-founded showcase CRXSS PLATFXRM. The weekend’s events also offers fresh perspectives in street culture and an experimental hip-hop dance battle, delivered in partnership with Rain Crew.
10 - 12 August
Celebrate the best in queer (LGBTQI+) culture with theatre, dance and music at the Raze Collective’s takeover of our Summertime Stage. The Raze Collective - a charity that supports, develops and nurtures queer performance in the UK - was established in response to the closure of many long-standing queer venues.
17 - 19 August
Roll up, roll up and join us for a weekend of free workshops and performances as part of the national celebrations of 250 years of the circus. From old-school circus staples like jugglers and clowns to incredible performance art, come down and try your hand or just watch on in amazement.
24 - 27 August
And lastly, but certainly not leastly, see the summer out in style with four days of music, performance and dance at a weekend of free celebrations for all ages. Make the most of your bank holiday and join us to sing and dance through the last of the summer sunshine and into the night at our epic party.
These weekends are just part of fabulous sun-drenched summer offering at Southbank Centre. Join us for fun shows for families and adults, free outdoor film nights and special summer food pop-ups across our riverside site.
