    Grace Jones’ Meltdown wrapped

    Pete Woodhead

Has there ever been a more eagerly anticipated Meltdown, than Grace Jones’?

Initially slated to take place in 2020, we finally got to welcome the musical icon to the Southbank Centre in June 2022. ‘There is no pandemic in the world that will stop me from curating the Meltdown festival,’ Jones told us, and she was more than good to her word.

Opened and closed by Jones herself, the festival was a reflection of the eclectic nature of her own career. Among the performers brought together by the musical superstar were Peaches, Hot Chip and Kasai Allstars, Skunk Anansie, Greentea Peng, Lee Fields, Skinny Pelembe, Big Joanie, John Grant, Dave Okumo, Angelique Kidjo, and Dry Cleaning.

Here’s a look back at an incredible ten days that incorporated not only music, but fashion, fervour, fierceness, oh, and hula-hooping.
