Violinist Alina Ibragimova
c. Eva Vermandel

Mozart slipped a few surprises into his Violin Concerto No.5, presented in a broadcast performance by the top soloist and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

After a lively introduction, the soloist puts the brakes on, entering with a soaring, singing line that seems to have escaped from the slow movement.

And the finale's sprightly minuet is interrupted by a vigorous 'Turkish' dance.

Alina Ibragimova makes a welcome return to the Philharmonia for this hugely enjoyable masterpiece.

Elim Chan has been described as 'a rare example of a young conductor at once brilliant and not in the least showing off' (The Times).

Her elegant precision, combined with a fierce love for music-making that radiates from the podium, have made her popular with Philharmonia musicians and audiences alike.

She conducts Beethoven's Eighth Symphony, one of the composer's own favourites. This masterly work is full of good humour and dramatic contrasts.

Chan opens with a piece for string ensemble by a British composer she is keen to champion, Anna Clyne.

Clyne's moving elegy, dedicated to her mother, meditates on grief and the search for solace.
