Sven Helbig x LCO
Skills, the new album from composer Sven Helbig is a melancholic hymn on humans’ ability to master extreme circumstances and develop perfection.
Helbig teams up with the London Contemporary Orchestra, deploying four french horns, a string quartet, vibraphones and electronics.
The sounds they create are added to by the visuals of artist Máni M Sigfússon, who has previously worked with Jóhann Jóhannsson, Sigur Rós, Kiasmos and the Rolling
Explaining his new project, Helbig says:
‘In my parents' living room stands an elaborately hand-forged copper kettle, my grandfather's masterpiece, hammered out of a single piece of copper.
Growing up in a family of craftsmen, I have been familiar since early childhood with the attitude of perfecting a thing for its own sake.
I am touched by the sight of almost ideal expressions of human activity, be it a forged piece, a perfectly built sentence or an athletic performance. I dedicate my album Skills to this fascination.’
